Contract: Full Time / Fixed Term

The International Energy Research Center (IERC) at Tyndall National Institute, University College, Cork invites applications for a Senior Researcher in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Energy Storage and Control. The role will lead and support the delivery of IERC projects,to the bid and proposal activity for new funding and will engage in a variety of both internal and external facing activities to in clude IERC partners. Therefore, the optimal candidate will have excellent technical, business and interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, a passion for multidisciplinary research in energy and an ambition to develop their own research agenda.

IERC researchers are expected to have an understanding of academic and industrial requirements, together with a sound understanding of the wider energy landscape beyond their area of ​​expertise. All researchers are encouraged to initiate and contribute to the writing of proposals for EU and other external funding streams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the delivery of technical tasks and work packages on a number of IERC projects, including guiding junior team members through their role in project delivery.
  • Providing the technical and administrative support that underpins the project coordination function for all phases of IERC projects including development, delivery and closeout, budget management and resource management to enhance and deliver the requirements of the funding body.
  • Write proposals and applications for new projects and technical reports/deliverables associated with project delivery and conference/journal papers for publication.
  • Assisting IERC colleagues to prepare, win, manage and deliver projects that accelerate the decarbonisation of the energy sector.
  • Liaise and build working relationships with potential industry and research partners to enable the establishment of strong consortia for proposals and extend the reach and reputation of the IERC.
  • The successful candidate will be supported and encouraged to develop their own research interests and activities.
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential criteria

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD in electrical engineering and a specialisation in control engineering, or a related field or have demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Typically 5+ years post-doctoral research experience including R&D and project management.
  • Demonstrable experience in research in energy storage, grid services and energy market areas.
  • Strong record of publications (or equivalent outputs including industry or policy reports)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to a tight schedule.
  • Previous experience in report writing for European funded projects.
  • Experience in working as part of H2020 or Horizon Europe projects.
  • Evidence of establishing and delivering new activities, projects or networks.
  • Strong communications, interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Has won (or clearly demonstrated the potential to win) independent competitive post-doctoral funding/awards
  • Has contributed to the formation of research consortia and securing research funding from research councils or industry

  • Evidence of an understanding of or contribution towards the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion goals of Tyndall, UCC.
  • Has taken the lead in executing collaborative research projects in cooperation with colleagues and project partners
  • Is contributing to and supporting the supervision of postgraduate students
  • Is committed to the professional development of their own career and acts as a mentor for postgraduate students
  • Has begun to initiate and establish collaborative relationships with relevant industry research or development groups with the potential for knowledge transfer
  • Has begun to explore possibilities of technology spin-out via the creation of, or involvement with, a start-up.

An appointment may be made on the Grade 6 Admin III (B) € 52,068- € 62,166

per annum. Salary placement on appointments will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
